Zip Code Wilmington is one of six technical training programs in the country currently approved to receive tuition reimbursement in pilot initiative by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The new government program, Veteran Employment Through Technology Education Courses (VET TEC), helps veterans enter the technology field by providing tuition and housing assistance for eligible veterans attending an approved technical training program, such as Zip Code Wilmington. The program focuses on training in computer software, information science, computer programming, media application, and data processing, in order to provide veterans with high-tech skills for a seamless transition after active duty. Out of the six programs currently approved to receive reimbursement under the VET TEC Pilot Program, Zip Code Wilmington is the only school located on the east coast, with other programs located in Chicago, Detroit and Greenwood Village, Colorado.
Projections suggest that by 2020 more than one million programming positions will remain unfilled due to a talent shortage. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there were 326,000 unemployed veterans in 2018. The growing need for programming talent can be partially addressed by retraining veterans who have completed their military service. Attending an intense software development training program, like Zip Code Wilmington, is now a more accessible option for veterans looking to gain programming skills and experience to help them land a well-paying position. Due to their ability to excel under pressure, communicate well in teams, and their strong problem-solving skills, veterans often make excellent software developers. In fact, several Zip Code alumni have transitioned from military life to successful careers as software developers.
VET TEC is a five-year pilot program for Veterans who aren’t on active duty, qualify for VA education assistance under the GI Bill, have at least one day of unexpired GI Bill entitlement, and are accepted into a program by a VA-approved training provider.
